Toast von SE Xi Jinping
President of the People’s Republic of China
At the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics Welcome Banquet
February 5, 2022
IOC President Thomas Bach,
Ladies and gentlemen,
I am very happy to meet so many friends, old and new, in Beijing as the Chinese celebrate the Spring Festival, the beginning of the Lunar New Year. On behalf of the Chinese government and people, and on behalf of my wife and I, let me begin by warmly welcoming all the high-ranking guests traveling to China and attending the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. I sincerely thank all the governments, peoples and international organizations that care about and support the Beijing Winter Olympics. In particular, I would like to express my appreciation to all the friends here who have overcome the difficulties and inconveniences caused by COVID-19 and have come all the way to Beijing to cheer for the Olympic Games and China.
The Beijing Winter Olympics officially opened yesterday evening at China’s National Stadium. After 14 years, Beijing’s Olympic cauldron has been lit again, making the city the first city in the world to host both the Summer and Winter Olympics. Committed to organizing green, inclusive, open and clean Games, China has made every effort to counteract the impact of COVID-19, earnestly fulfilling its solemn promise to the international community and ensuring the smooth opening of the Beijing Winter Olympics like planned secured.
Greater public participation in winter sports contributes to the Olympic movement. Through the preparation and organization of the Winter Olympics and the promotion of winter Olympic sports, China has popularized winter sports among ordinary people, achieved the goal of encouraging 300 million Chinese people to enjoy snow and ice sports, and made a new contribution to the cause of Olympism done worldwide.
Ladies and gentlemen,
The Olympic Movement has always supported humanity’s striving for peace, solidarity and progress.
— We will keep in mind the original aspirations of the Olympic Movement and together maintain world peace. The Olympic Movement was born for peace and has thrived thanks to peace. The Olympic Truce Resolution, adopted by consensus by the United Nations General Assembly last December, calling for the promotion of peace through sport, represents the common aspiration of the international community. We must uphold mutual respect, equality, dialogue and consultation, strive to bridge differences and resolve conflict, and work together for a world of lasting peace.
— We will promote the spirit of the Olympic Movement and stand in solidarity to meet the common challenges facing the international community. The COVID-19 pandemic is still raging while global issues like climate change and terrorism keep looming. The international community should stand together more closely. The only way for all countries to effectively address the various challenges is to strengthen solidarity and cooperation and work together for a common future. We must practice true multilateralism, uphold the international system centered on the United Nations and the international order underpinned by international law, and work together to build an international family of harmony and cooperation.
— We will act in the spirit of the Olympic Movement and continuously monitor human progress. The Olympic Movement aims to achieve a well-rounded human development. We must follow the trend of the times, stay true to the common values of humanity such as peace, development, justice, democracy and freedom, promote exchanges and mutual learning between civilizations, and work together to build a community with a common future for humanity .
Ladies and gentlemen,
To borrow a Chinese poetic line: “The old year goes out with the sound of firecrackers; the new comes with the warmth of wine and the spring breeze.” China has just entered the year of the tiger according to the lunar calendar. Tiger is a symbol of strength, courage and fearlessness. I wish all Olympic athletes excellence with the power of the tiger. I am confident that with the joint efforts of all of us, Beijing 2022 will surely go down in history as a rational, safe and great Olympic Games.
In closing, I propose a toast:
On the dynamic development of the Olympic Movement;
To the noble cause of mankind for peace and development; and
Here’s to the health of all honored guests and their families.
