According to White Helmets aides, local residents and journalists in Atme, the American attack killed 13 people, including six children and four women.

The exile group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) also states that 13 people were killed, but that four children and two women were among the victims.

It is not known whether they were killed by American soldiers or when the IS leader is said to have detonated the bomb vest.

– It was very scary, nobody knew what happened, says Jamil el-Deddo, who lives in a camp for internally displaced people near the house attacked.

Bloody

The top floor of the house where the IS leader is said to have been hiding was completely destroyed in the American attack. Bloody soils clearly tell of the drama that took place there in the night hours.

There is a cot in one of the bedrooms and a blue plastic swing hanging from the ceiling. The kitchen is completely black after being destroyed by fire.

One of the neighbors, Omar Saleh, says that the doors and windows in his house began to vibrate when several helicopters arrived at 1.10am. He then heard a loudspeaker voice urging the women to surrender or leave the area. According to Saleh, the man spoke with an Iraqi or Saudi accent.

– This went on for 45 minutes. There was no answer. Then they started shooting with machine guns, he says.

The shooting lasted about two hours, and helicopters hung low over the village the entire time, Saleh said.

Helicopter blown up

Atme residents also say they heard a powerful explosion. According to a US security source, one of the helicopters blew up due to mechanical problems.

According to SOHR, the attack sparked an exchange of gunfire and fighting between US soldiers and rebels in the village, which activist Taher al-Omar confirms he witnessed.

Broken shop fronts also show that there was an exchange of fire some distance away from the house that was attacked.

The US-led anti-IS coalition has previously carried out a series of drone and airstrikes against suspected ISIS and al-Qaeda leaders in Idlib.

The province is largely controlled by the extremist Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), believed to be an offshoot of al-Qaeda in Syria.
