Top performances, results from the Bergen County Championships – Archyde

Snow could only delay the inevitable on Sunday. Nothing could stop Immaculate Heart — or Tenafly’s Aaron Baltaytis.

Baltaytis led Tenafly to his first county swim title in a decade at the Bergen Meet of Champions and broke an old record in the butterfly. His Tigers beat second-place Bergen Catholic 231-182, while Immaculate Heart doubled in the girls’ swim event at Northern Highlands.

The meeting, held at the Felix Festa Middle School Pool, was pushed back to the day due to a scheduling conflict caused by the recent snow storm.

Tenafly sealed its fate with four wins, including individual gold for Jason Yi in the breaststroke and William Kaminski in the 100 freestyle. It completes a mission that has been the focus since a top 3 finish at the 2020 Championships.

“They thought two years ago that this was the meeting they wanted to win and create,” said Tenafly coach Matt White. “That stab of being so close at the end and not being able to make it was always a focus.”

This was arguably the fastest meeting in tournament history with eight new records including seven on the boys’ side. One went to Steven Bendoraitis (New Milford/Dumont), who swept the distance in the freestyle and broke the mark in the 500m. Demarest student Eric Lee claimed his own in the singles medley, passing Jason Arthur on the county mantle during a photo-finish with Baltaytis.

Baltaytis, a junior, made amends in the butterfly as he repeated as champion in a stunning 48.67 seconds. The Northwestern Commitment also helped the Tigers start the night with the best time in the medley relay.

“Not only is he fast, but I will always point to his ability to understand strategy and the team mentality first,” said White. “He’s one of those kids who texts me constantly throughout the season to get me into the best event for the team.”

With seven wins from eleven races, Immaculate Heart extended a clear lead among the girls. It’s the Blue Eagles’ 23rd straight title, but this one felt a little different.

For one, almost all of their top scorers were making West Nyack debuts. No one beat Blue Eagle’s sophomore Cornelia Fox, who won 4-on-4 in her tournament debut.

“The girls swam phenomenally,” said IHA coach Lia Kunnapas. “We couldn’t have asked for anything better. We had a lot of personal bests and a few records were broken.”

The most unusual moment of the evening came in the 100 breaststroke. Immaculate Heart senior Sydney Severini and freshman Kayla Rodriguez both touched the wall in 1:04.8 for part of the title.

“They were both happy for each other,” Kunnapas said. “It was exciting to see. We were shocked on the sidelines. It was a fun moment for her.”

Fun wasn’t limited to the IHA side. Indian Hills rookie Katie Lawrence won the sprint routine while the Northern Highlands girls won their second-ever county relay title.

It was also a big night for Hackensack’s Chris Jackson, who managed to break two records in about 10 minutes. After leading the Comets to their first county relay title (boys or girls) in the 200 freestyle relay, he dove back in the water for a historic time in the backstroke.

“It was really beautiful,” Jackson said. “Two years ago I was only in the districts. I’ve never seen a relay in the districts and how crazy it gets.”
