A 40-year-old doctor who worked at a London hospital allegedly died by suicide at her home in South Delhi’s Greater Kailash, police said today.
The woman, identified as Megha Kayal, suffered from depression after recently losing her 79-year-old mother, police said, adding that a suicide note was also found at the site. “Self-inflicted injuries” were found on the woman’s thigh, police said.
Megha Kayal has been a neurologist at Milton Keynes University Hospital in London for a year. Before that, she was a doctor at the Apollo Hospital in Sarita Vihar in Delhi, she said.
Deputy Police Commissioner (South) Bonita Jaiker said after receiving a Medico Legal Case (MLC) about the suicide from Apollo Hospital on Sunday, a police team arrived at the woman’s home.
Megha Kayal’s sister-in-law told police that Kayal suffered from depression after her mother’s death on January 27 due to an illness. Her father also had cancer, police said.
“Around 7:40 a.m., Kayal’s sister-in-law opened her room’s door with a spare key after the deceased failed to come out despite repeated calls from her family. Kayal was found lying unconscious in the room. Injuries to her thigh were also noted. The family members immediately took her to the Apollo hospital, where she was pronounced dead,” said the deputy chief of police.
A suicide note was also found. No foul play was suspected by her family members, the official said.
Megha Kayal was deeply shocked and depressed by her mother’s death, she added.
The police said that an investigation was carried out and the body was handed over to the family after the post-mortem.
