Argentina is the fiscal tango partner the International Monetary Fund can’t give up

All of this comes from a place of hard love for a country I know and adore. As a journalist covering Argentina on and off for three decades, including five years that I lived there, I have long compared it to my first – and last – Alfa Romeo. Just like this Alfa, Argentina’s glossy finish has a classic beauty. Buenos Aires is a Potemkin village of a capital, crammed with Belle Epoque buildings, elegant wrought-iron balconies and chic cafes. But even so, Alfa, Argentina, keeps breaking down because when you lift the hood, its insides just don’t work.
