Everton new manager LIVE – Frank Lampard and Vitor Pereira speak, Duncan Ferguson last, Wayne Rooney declines interview – Archyde

Former Everton goalkeeper Nigel Martyn believes Frank Lampard is the best option to succeed Rafa Benitez at Goodison Park.

The club are hoping to make a decision today as they are said to be holding their final interviews with Lampard, Vitor Pereira and Duncan Ferguson.

However, Martyn believes Lampard should be further up the race and it would be “too soon” for Wayne Rooney.

However, the former Everton and Manchester United man is expected to remain in Derby County as he has reportedly pulled out of the running.

“I think Frank is a little bit further after spending a year in the Premier League and for me he’s probably the one who’s ahead at the moment,” Martyn told the PA news agency in an interview moderated by www.101greatgoals.com.

“I don’t think the managers are out there that you would want on hand to help push Everton forward in the next few seasons. I think it’s probably a bit early with Wayne, although he’s had two of the better managers we’ve had in the Premier League in recent years, which he will no doubt have learned from.

“He’s doing a great job at Derby and if he can manage to keep them in this division that would be an absolutely amazing achievement. But if I’m being honest, Frank is a little further along in his managerial career than Wayne.

“The board and owner are under pressure from the fans and it’s important to get someone not just in the short-term firefight for the next few games, but going forward.”

He added that Pereira’s interview with Sky Sports earlier this week might not help his case.

Martyn also said: “This is an extremely important decision that the club is making on who to appoint. Things like yesterday don’t really help I’m afraid.

“I can’t help but think it’s probably not a good career move. It’s certainly a bold move and we’ll find out pretty soon whether it’s stupid or not.”
