Microsoft on Tuesday (25) released the financial report for the calendar year 2021. One of the dates that most caught our attention was that considering the entire last year, the Xbox posted sales of $16.2 billion, the best result ever.
The value exceeded the result of 2020, which had been the best-selling year for electronic games up to that point, by 17.7%. The “Content and Services” area, which is very strategic for the company, grew by 8.8% compared to 2020.
The question that includes Xbox GamePass, for example, accounted for 77% of total revenue generated by the Xbox division last year. The Microsoft subsidiary generated revenue of $12.6 billion with the services.
Also in relation to this sector, it has been reported that there has been an increase in Game Pass subscriptions and sales of first-party games. By contrast, sales of third-party games declined.
Despite the importance of the Xbox subscription service, results with Microsoft’s games division were record-breaking, largely due to a sharp increase in hardware sales. With 2021 being the first full year for current-gen consoles, hardware sales increased 63% compared to 2020. Through the sale of video games and other accessories, the brand reached a turnover of 3.7 billion US dollars.
The report points out that the significant increase was mainly due to a very sharp increase in demand for the Xbox-Serie X e Serie S. In order to meet the players’ demand, the production of the products has also been accelerated to satisfy the fans.
