Tensions ran high at Jinnah Circle in the Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh when some Vahini Hindu workers attempted to unfurl the Indian flag on the tower on Wednesday January 26.
Members of the Hindu Vahini have been prevented by Andhra Pradesh Police from raising the national flag at Jinnah Tower to mark Republic Day because the celebrations could create community troubles in the area.
They were briefly detained and then released. The video, in which police used violence to evict the Vahini Hindu workers from the site, prompted chastisements from the BJP and other nationalists.
Earlier, the Andhra Pradesh BJP had urged the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu (YSRCP) Congress Party government led by YS Jagan Mohan Reddy to rename Jinnah Tower to Guntur.
BJP National Secretary Y Satya Kumar, Telangana BJP MLA Raja Singh and Andhra Pradesh BJP State Unit Chief Somu Veeraraju had called for Jinnah Tower to be renamed after APJ Abdul Kalam.
