Watford are set to appoint former England boss Roy Hodgson as their new head coach until the end of the season.
Hodgson is set to replace Claudio Ranieri. who was released on Monday After three and a half months in office, Watford sit 19th in the table, two points from safety.
Hodgson is expected to sign a short-term contract until the end of the season, when all parties will assess his future. Sky sports news understands Hodgson’s deal is “easily expandable.”
The Englishman, who has been out of work since leaving Crystal Palace at the end of last season, arrived at Watford’s training ground on Tuesday morning to finalize the deal.
Watford’s players are due to arrive for training at midday and Hodgson is expected to complete training if the paperwork is done in time.
Ranieri also turned up at Watford training session on Tuesday morning to pick up his belongings and spoke exclusively to Sky Sports News before leaving: “I have nothing but good luck to say to everyone at Watford – the fans, the board, everyone.”
Asked if he was given enough time to make his mark, he added: “This is football. But I think with new players Watford can be safe and too [arriving] is a fantastic manager. I wish you all the best”.
At 74, Hodgson will become the oldest manager ever in the Premier League, while the job at Watford will be the 17th different club he has managed in his 46-year career.
Hodgson had already worked with the Pozzo family during a brief stint at Udinese in 2001 that ended with his 17-game sacking, but he has always maintained good relations with the Italian owners.
Hodgson will succeed Ranieri, who has failed to turn the tide of the team since his appointment in October. The Hornets fell into the Premier League relegation zone for the first time this season 3-0 home defeat to fellow Norwich on Friday.
No wins, no goals conceded, no discipline – Watford fights
Watford are without a win in nine games in all competitions (U1 L8), their longest streak without a win since December 2013 (10).
Norwich celebrated their biggest win in a Premier League game since beating West Brom 4-0 in May 2013 and their biggest away win in the division since September 1993, a 5-1 win at Everton.
Watford have now gone 30 Premier League games without conceding a goal (since beating Liverpool 3-0 in February 2020), with only West Brom suffering a longer run in the history of the competition (34 in 2011; Blackburn in 2012 and Wolves 2012 both also on the 30th).
Since the start of the 2016/17 season, only Arsenal (19) have received more Premier League red cards than Watford (18).
Under Ranieri, Watford have lost seven of their last eight league games. Her last win was that 4-1 win over Manchester United at Vicarage Road in November.
Ranieri’s departure means Watford have fired five head coaches since Javi Gracia left in September 2019.
Quique Sanchez Flores, Nigel Pearson, Vladimir Ivic, Munoz and Ranieri have all left the club during those 28 months, while Hayden Mullins has also served as caretaker twice during that period.
Upon his appointment, Hodgson will become the Pozzo family’s 15th permanent manager since they completed their acquisition of Watford in June 2012.
Watford’s head coach has left the company since the Pozzo family took over in June 2012

When is Hodgson’s first game if appointed?

Why did Watford choose Hodgson?
Sky Sports News-Reporter Gary Cotterill:
“Roy Hodgson is a safe pair of hands and has all the experience in the world. This will be his 22nd job in a 45-year career. He worked wonders at Crystal Palace in 2017.
“When he arrived they were 0-0-7 – they had lost their license to thrill! It was seven defeats in seven games but in the end they managed to finish 11th in the Premier League and he’s done a similar job to Fulham.
“He’s a very experienced manager who, of course, has also been at Inter Milan, Liverpool and England. He clearly still has the hunger to show that he can perform at the highest level even at his age.
“He left Palace on his own decision but like he said Sky sports news Last week he’s still hungry and thinks he can turn things around. He may have caught the Watford owner on the back of what he told Sky last week!
“He was already at the training ground after signing some paperwork on Monday.”
