Stowaway survives in nose wheel of South Africa-Netherlands cargo plane – police – Archyde

A stowaway was discovered in the wheel area under the front of a Cargolux cargo plane that arrived at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport from Africa on Sunday, Dutch military police said.

“The man is doing well under the circumstances and has been taken to a hospital,” said the Dutch border police.

Marechausse spokeswoman Joanna Helmonds said the man’s age and nationality had not yet been determined.

“Our first concern, of course, was his health,” she said.

β€œIt is definitely very unusual for someone to survive the cold at such an altitude – very, very unusual.

“A spokesman for the cargo company Cargolux confirmed in an email that the stowaway was on a flight operated by Cargolux Italia.

“We are unable to comment further until authorities and the airline have completed their investigation,” they said.

The only Cargolux cargo flight to arrive at Schiphol on Sunday was a Boeing 747 freighter, arriving from Johannesburg and stopping in Nairobi, Kenya, according to Schiphol’s website and flight tracking data.

A spokesman for the airport declined to answer questions about the incident.
