Valve, creators of the latest Steam Deck handheld due out this year, continues to fund continuous integration (CI) testing of Mesa commits and Radeon driver testing. This information is welcome for Linux users, but also for steam deck Player.
Mesa receives additional funding from Valve to further test “Steam Deck” Radeon Linux graphics drivers
Created by Charlie Turner, a programming consultant for Igalia a merge request Head to FreeDesktop’s Mesa site today for more additional dEQP runners. Igalia is an open source consulting agency that “specializes in the growth of innovative projects and solutions”. The request shows Valve’s involvement in overseeing further AMD Radeon Linux driver tests. Valve uses Radeon graphics in its system, and it would be safe to assume that Valve would want to ensure its latest handheld is as compatible as possible.
The dEQP runners, or drawElements quality program, include tests for many graphics APIs, including OpenGL ES, EGL, and Vulkan. Graphics API testing has been critical to Mesa’s continuous integration testing to secure unstable commits that fail to reach Mesa for OpenGL/Vulkan graphics API retrograde actions.

This series proposes to add more dEQP bare metal runners sponsored by Valve. At the moment the runners rely on user selection (much like freedreno’s constrained traces) as there are not enough computers to meet the runtime goals needed to be included in the automatic pre-merge pipelines. There is no secret about the test loads, the restriction is purely practical for the time being and any interested user can request access to the runners.
A follow-up series will add trace test runners to the CI, using a similar approach as above.
Mesa’s CI testing for the AMD Radeon Linux graphics driver has shown reluctance to the number of hardware systems they’ve adopted, including those able to test new Mesa merge requirements and build fixes on the fly. Valve’s support will help move the process forward and identify more issues efficiently and effectively. This process allows for efficiencies without slowing down the creation of patches that may await testing before the driver is released.
Valve’s new CI bare metal runners are based entirely on Radeon, so the company understandably requests additional testing. Especially that Valve’s direction with the new Steam Deck gaming system with AMD Radeon graphics includes open source drivers focused on the work of RADV Vulkan. The ongoing tests now include Navi and Navi 2 systems, Kabini, Stoney, Polaris, Vega and Renoir series.
