New Delhi:

Karnataka reported 50,210 Covid cases in the past 24 hours, two days after the state lifted the weekend curfew imposed to curb the spread of the coronavirus. There are currently more than 3.57 lakh active cases in the state.

Karnataka today reported more cases than Maharashtra, which has been hardest hit in recent months. Maharashtra reported 48,270 new COVID-19 cases and 52 deaths on Friday.

Of the 50,210 new cases, 26,299 were reported in the state capital, Bengaluru, Karnataka Health Minister K Sudhakar said. During the same period, Maharashtra’s capital Mumbai reported 2,550 new COVID-19 cases.

The positivity rate, the number of cases detected per 100 tests, rose from 19.33 percent to 22.77 percent in the state.

As of Saturday, the state had reported 42,470 new infections, about 5,500 fewer than Friday.

Karnataka has also reported 22,842 recoveries from the virus and 19 Covid deaths in the past 24 hours.

The state government announced on Friday that it would lift the weekend curfew on the grounds that hospitalizations were not significant despite rising cases.

The surge in new infections across the country is being driven by the new variant of Covid, Omicron.

Mr Sudhakar informed that 165 new cases of omicron were confirmed in Bengaluru today, bringing the total to 931 in the state.
