One in seven police officers suffers from post-traumatic disorders (PRESSE) – Belgium – Archyde

(Belga) More than one in seven local police officers in Flanders suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). De Standaard writes this based on a study by KU Leuven among 1,896 police officers.

7.4 percent of police officers on the scene reported suffering from the four symptoms of PTSD: reliving the incident, avoidance of thoughts or situations reminiscent of the incident, excessive alertness and tension, and severe negative effects on daily work. Another 7.6 percent struggle with three of the four symptoms. “Everything indicates that this is the absolute lower limit,” says Nils Rentmeesters, researcher at the Faculty of Psychology at KU Leuven, author of the study and psychologist at the Federal Police Medical Service. “Agents tend to underestimate their complaints.” PTSD is primarily caused by gun incidents, life-threatening situations, sexually abusive behavior, and incidents with severe emotional impact. Striking: Post-traumatic stress occurs in the various police zones just as frequently as in men and women and in different age groups. (Belgium)
