Preseason All-American nominee Tobi Azeez had 19 kills as the University of Mount Olive men’s volleyball team beat George Mason 23-25, 25-22, 17-25, 25-23, 15-12 on Saturday night stopped.

The Trojans earned their first-ever win over the Patriots in three attempts.

Dominic Haggerty contributed 13 kills while Eric Visgitis had 10 kills and seven blocks as the team leader.

Oliver Merritt dished out 39 assists.

“It was great to get off to a good start against a strong team today,” said Azeez. “The boys fought hard and brought a lot of energy to defend our home place with a win. While we still have things we can continue to work on and improve on, this win is a sign of the hard work and discipline we’ve practiced over the pre-season.”

UMO began Tuesday at Queens University-Charlotte with an eight-game road swing. Also on the schedule are back-to-back contests at Brigham Young and Ohio State.

Umo still perfect

After a two-week layoff due to COVID protocols, the UMO women’s basketball team remained perfect with back-to-back road wins at Conference Carolina rivals North Greenville (79-54) and Erskine (61-32).

Ivanda Hudjakova hit a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds against North Greenville. Sherry Johnson contributed 14 points and six rebounds while Laila Harris put down 12 points.

Azariah Fields dished out seven assists.

Fields lost 18 points and gave out five assists against Erskine. Hudjakova amassed 14 points and seven rebounds, followed by Johnson with nine points.

The Trojans (10-0 agg, 8-0 CC) entertained UNC Pembroke on Monday.

Trojans drop two

UMO lost back-to-back road games to rival Chowan (74-73) and nemesis Erskine (94-87) in the Conference Carolinas basketball scene.

Michael Brown led five Trojans by double digits with 14 points against Chowan. Alan Trekle (12 points), Cole Johnson (11), Trayvon Ferrell (11) and Darius Spragley (10) also scratched the scoreboard.

Ferrell pulled down 10 rebounds.

Brown scored 20 points against Erskine, who took a 13-point lead at halftime and never gave it up again.

Matthias Caver (15 points), Treekle (12), Spragley (12) and Cole Johnson (12) also scored well. Caver hit six rebounds while Brown gave seven assists.

The Trojans (9-7 overall, 8-3 CC) entertained UNC Pembroke on Monday.
