Name Archipelago President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has chosen the provincial capital of the new state. The debate on the name Nusantara had taken place at the level of the Special Committee for the Provincial Capital Bill or the Special Committee for IKN DPR RI before the legislative product had been ratified as law.
The head of Bappenas, Suharso Monoarfa, explained that the reason for choosing the name Nusantara is that it is long known and internationally iconic. In addition, the name easily describes the Republic of Indonesia.
“The reason is that Nusantara has been known for a long time and is an icon internationally, it is simple and describes our archipelago, the Republic of Indonesia, and I think we all agree on the term Nusantara,” said the gathering at the DPR summarized by detik.com, Wednesday (1/19/2022).
Yesterday, the Provincial Capital Bill (RUU IKN) was also adopted as law in the plenary session of the Indonesian Parliament. Thus, the capital was moved from Jakarta to East Kalimantan (Kaltim) under the name Nusantara.

One of the foreign media outlets that has highlighted the archipelago is CNN International. “Indonesia names new capital and agrees to move from Jakarta,” read the headline from CNN International.
“Indonesia has named its new capital Nusantara after lawmakers approved the move from Jakarta to Kalimantan, a forest-covered area east of the island of Borneo,” wrote CNN International, as quoted by detik.com.
The spotlight also came from British media The Guardian. The Guardian highlighted the archipelago in an article entitled “Indonesia names new capital Nusantara, replacing sinking Jakarta”.
