Taranaki firefighters are working to put out a ‘hard-to-reach’ blaze north of New Plymouth.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand was called to a property at Mōkau Rd or State Highway 3, Mt Messenger around 2.40pm Tuesday.
It is believed to have been a runaway burning.

The fire department’s central communications chief, Murray Dunbar, said Waitara and Urenui crews had been on the scene for some time but were “having difficulty accessing the fire”.
Dunbar said it was “hot and scorching” when crews arrived and was about half an acre by 5,000 square meters.
By 4:30 p.m., it had spread to another ravine, he said.
Rural crews were already on the scene offering assistance and a helicopter had been called in to help fight the fire.
