Emirates pilot in contention for photo award for A380 Burj Khalifa image – Archyde

A Dubai resident has reached the finals of an international photography competition with a picture taken from his back garden Emirates advertisement with a A380 Airplane flying past Burj Khalifa.

Emirates pilot and avid amateur photographer James Ward captured the image from his home in Dubai’s Meydan Ward.

Mr Ward, from the UK, said he had no idea the social media hit promotion was being filmed when he took the shot. His attention was drawn to the plane’s unusual flight pattern, he added.

The image has since been selected as one of the last 10 images in a global aviation-themed competition.

“I took the picture coming home after taking my son to the school run,” said Mr Ward, 35.

“We live below the flight path to Dubai and are used to planes flying overhead, but I thought this plane was different because it kept spinning and spinning.

“I pulled out my camera and took a few photos, this one happened to be perfectly timed.”

His picture received such positive reception on Instagram that it caught the attention of Coradine Aviation, the US pilot software company behind the competition.

“I posted it on Instagram shortly after recording it in October. It exploded and got thousands upon thousands of likes,” he said.

“The response was far greater than I expected, especially for an image that was just something spontaneous and spontaneous.”

Last week, Emirates airline released a video of stuntwoman Nicole Smith-Ludvik dressed as a flight attendant standing atop the Burj Khalifa.

Ms Smith-Ludvik was filmed atop the world’s tallest building holding up signs that read ‘Wow, I can see Dubai Expo’ and ‘Finally, here come my friends’.

The camera then pans out to reveal a passing Emirates A380, decked out in Expo 2020 Dubai livery, while holding up another sign inviting people to travel with Emirates to the ‘world’s largest exhibition’.

The video has almost 500,000 likes on Emirates’ Instagram page.

“When Emirates published their ad I realized that she had obviously been shot when I took this picture,” Mr Ward said.

“I happened to take the picture from my house.

“It is the meeting of two Dubai icons. On one side you have the Burj Khalifa, then you have an A380 aircraft that is synonymous with Emirates.”

If Mr. Ward’s image is selected as the winner of the competition, he will receive a 10-year subscription to Coradine Aviation.

Emirates released a behind-the-scenes video on Monday explaining how they created their latest campaign featuring Ms Smith-Ludvik.

The parachutist and stunt woman has proven beyond a doubt that she has a head for heights.

Earlier in August, she proudly stood atop the Burj Khalifa for an Emirates video celebrating the easing of travel restrictions between the UK and the United Arab Emirates.

Ms Smith-Ludvik is among just a handful of people who have had the privilege of standing atop the Burj Khalifa – including Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, and actors Tom Cruise and Will Smith.
