Sam Kerr was beaten by Barcelona’s Alexia Putellas for the Fifa award for best player of the year, AAP reports.
The Matildas captain finished second behind Putellas, while another Spanish midfielder, Jenni Hermoso, also from Champions League winners Barcelona, was third.
In the men’s, Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich and Poland won ahead of Lionel Messi and Mo Salah.
The award ceremony took place in Zurich, but most of the guests appeared via video link. The Australia captain was not seen as she prepares for the Matildas’ opening game of the Asian Cup on Friday in India.
Kerr surprisingly didn’t make the FIFPRO Women’s World XI, but neither did Putellas or Hermoso in a very odd selection that didn’t include players from either Barcelona or Tokyo Olympic gold medalists Canada.
Kerr’s Chelsea boss Emma Hayes was Women’s Football Manager of the Year, while Thomas Tuchel, also from Chelsea, accepted the men’s award.
International captains, coaches and selected media vote. Kerr himself voted for Putellas, Caroline Graham Hansen of Barcelona and Norway and Hermoso in the player category.
As coaches, she chose Hayes, Barcelona’s Lluis Cortes and Bev Priestman of Canada.
Matildas manager Tony Gustavsson voted for Kerr, Putellas and Arsenal’s Vivianne Miedema.
Kerr scored 38 points, 14 behind Putellas, five ahead of Hermoso.
