MANILA, Philippines — Agents from the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) have prevented an escape attempt by three people deprived of their liberty (PDLs), including Rolan “Kerwin” Espinosa, a confessed drug dealer.
In a statement Monday, the NBI said the head of the NBI’s Security Management Division and his chief executive received information last Thursday, January 13, that Espinosa and two other PDLs were planning to exit the detention center through “the exhaust fan hole.” “Escape to the ceiling.”
Authorities inspected the prison the same night the NBI received the information.
“In one of the prison’s cells, the raid team of agents observed a deformed exhaust fan that, when [removed], has exposed a hole that a detainee could escape from,” the NBI said.
NBI Executive Director Eric Distor said security at the prison had been tightened since the incident.
“In light of this incident, security measures at the prison have since been tightened with regular inspections of all prison facilities,” he said.
Distor praised its new chief and executive officer for intercepting the three detainees.
“Once they received the information, they acted promptly,” he said.
