At least 70 people were left homeless by flooding in Ladysmith

LADYSMITH – At least 70 residents were left homeless in Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal, after severe flooding.

Local rivers, including the Tugela, have burst their banks and flooded the city’s central business district. Shops and some houses were flooded.

Civil protection teams have been dispatched.

The Qedusizi Dam, the closest dam to Ladysmith, contributes to the flooding situation in the area.

Those who lost their homes have been evacuated to a community center for safety. No more incidents have been reported to date.

Upon arrival in the area on Monday afternoon, Messages from eyewitnesses saw a number of stores closed due to the situation.

The community said help is being sought with the help of NGOs.

“There is a foundation called Al-Imdaad that donated some blankets and mattresses and food last night. They got breakfast in the morning, they got something for lunch and we will feed them tonight as well,” said District Mayor iNkosi Ntandoyesizwe Shabalala.
