Quoted from ReutersOn Friday (1/14/2022), China suspended dozens of international flights amid a global spike in omicron cases.
They reported local transmission of the highly contagious variant of omicron in the northern city of Tianjin and three other provinces, but didn’t say how many cases of omicron were detected overall.
However, authorities have warned that Omicron increases the increased risk of transmission of Covid-19 as more people return to China from overseas for the Lunar New Year holiday.
The Shanghai municipal government has also severely restricted tourism activities to prevent local contagion of Covid-19.
Cities across China are becoming more vigilant about Covid-19 ahead of the Lunar New Year season in January and preparations for the Beijing Winter Olympics, which take place on February 4.
Athletes and other personnel involved in the Olympic Games mostly arrive on special charter flights and soon enter a strict “closed circuit” that separates them from the wider population.
The Shanghai Tourism and Culture Administration said travel agencies and online tourism companies should stop organizing group tours to and from Shanghai.
This happened because as of Thursday (1/13/2022) there were 5 cases of domestically transmitted infections, all related to arrivals from abroad.
Most of the new cases have been detected in the central province of Henan, where the omicron and delta variants are spreading, and in Tianjin.
