Pfizer anticovid pill: Everything you need to know

Paxlovid, Pfizer’s treatment created solely for emergency use cAgainst COVID-19, it was approved in the country by the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris).

This pill prevents hospitalization and the most serious symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 infection in patients with greater vulnerability.

The drug, which has also been approved in the United States and Europe, is an alternative to treat the infection, with a 88% effective against hospitalization and death from coronavirus.

Paxlovid’s authorization was issued after a technical analysis carried out by Cofepris, who examined the scientific evidence presented by the pharmaceutical company Pfizer, together with experts from the National Committee for Science and Technology (Conacyt). The evidence was based on the Pfizer clinical trial that was tested in people from 18 years and older in more than 20 countries, including Mexico.

Paxlovid, has two components that work together, nirmatrelvir, which inhibits a SARS-CoV-2 protein preventing the virus from replicating, while ritonavir, slows down the breakdown of the drug to help it stay in the body longer, explains an official statement.

Who can consume Pfizer’s anti-Covid pill?

In Mexico, the antiviral is recommended for adults with COVID-19 who have mild or moderate symptoms, and are among the high risk sectors, as well as people with obesity, heart disease, cancer or diabetes.

In the case of the United States, the drug can be supplied to children 12 years of age and older, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
