Cork-based life science design company BioPharma Engineering has been acquired by Unispace, a global workplace strategy, design and engineering company.
BioPharma Engineering will be known as BPE and a Unispace Global Life Sciences Center of Excellence will be established in Ireland to promote and grow the global life science business.
BioPharma Engineering designs and supplies laboratory, research and manufacturing equipment for global pharmaceutical and life science companies.
In 2021, the company completed more than 150 million euros in investment projects, many of which were for production facilities for Covid-19 drugs.
The partnership with Unispace, which has 48 offices in 26 countries worldwide, will support the company’s continued expansion in key markets in North America, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.
Foreign Secretary Simon Coveney has welcomed the news of the takeover.
“Cork is already home to nine of the world’s top ten life sciences companies, and the new Unispace Center of Excellence for Life Sciences further solidifies the region as a world-renowned talent and competence hotspot for the pharmaceutical and medical device industries,” said he
“This partnership between an Irish design engineering company and a global workspace giant is an example of the talent, expertise and ambition that Irish companies epitomize,” he added.
BioPharma Engineering’s executive director and founder John O’Reilly said they are focused on accelerating growth in the life science sector.
“Today’s announcement and the merger with Unispace, a global leader in workplace design, ensures we have the resources, infrastructure, and investments to expand rapidly around the world, while at the same time leveraging the talent and expertise, which we have built in Ireland through our offices in Cork and Dublin continue to lead the way, ”he said.
Steve Quick, CEO of Unispace, said life science companies are faced with the challenge of quickly expanding their presence to meet growing demand.

A virtual company-wide event has been held over the past few days bringing together US and Irish management and their teams to internally disseminate news about the partnership.
