Square Enix today released the traditional New Year’s message from Final Fantasy XIV producer and director Naoki Yoshida.

This is really special when you consider that the recently released Endwalker expansion is the final chapter in the original Final Fantasy XIV story, which has continued since the 1.0 release in September 2010. Now, over eleven years later, a whole new story begins.

Most interestingly, Yoshida-san shared that plans for the game’s future will be revealed before the next major update (number 6.1) is released.

You can read the full message below.

Happy New Year to all of the FFXIVers out there!
This is producer and director Naoki Yoshida.

Although we had to delay Endwalker by two weeks before it was originally supposed to be released, the expansion went on 7/1/1. It’s now been a full eleven years since I got on board FFXIV, and I feel like I’ve put everything I have into this expansion. I’m excited to see what impression it made on you.

Game content aside, the large influx of players around the world since the middle of the year and the impact of Covid-19 on server equipment supplies have resulted in extremely long login queues and I would once again like to sincerely apologize. We are currently working on fundamentally addressing the situation, such as adding logical data centers and increasing the number of worlds in all regions, and in the meantime ask for your patience.

Well, as the title suggests, Endwalker ends the story that has been woven since 1.0. FFXIV itself is far from over, however, and we’ve already started creating new journeys for all the Warriors of Light – or rather adventurers – you can take!

In fact, just as I was thinking about my next adventure, I noticed that a piece of paper was left on my desk. And what should be written on it but another poem!

After greeting the dawn of rebirth, being whisked away into the azure blue sky, liberating a crimson land, restoring darkness to a light-flooded world and now standing with the waning moon behind them, our adventurers have turned their gaze towards a new beginning. At least that’s how I take the words …

FFXIV has passed its ten year operating life – a goal all MMORPGs should strive to achieve – and now we have ten more in our sights. The first step on this new leg of our journey is Patch 6.1, before which we will take the opportunity to share our plans for the future of FFXIV. Please look forward to it.

It’s crazy to think 2022 will be my twelfth year at the helm of FFXIV. Sometimes I can’t help but wonder that I’m not getting bored, but then I want to achieve so much more with FFXIV. As I said before, I consider it my life’s work and hope to develop and expand the game with all of you.

Endwalker is the culmination of anything we’ve built in eleven years, and I know it will be extremely hard to top. But just like your adventures and the efforts of the development and operations teams, we will continue to build on our wealth of stories, experiences and emotions and strive to reach new heights!

Once again, I wish you a Happy New Year and thank you for your continued support!

Final Fantasy XIV is currently available for PlayStation 4, PS5 and PC. The upgrade to PS5 is offered for free to owners of the PS4 version. the End converter extension was released just a few weeks ago.

We only found out a few days ago the game is so successful that Square Enix had to stop selling its to reduce server congestion.
