An online retailer has claimed they lost a staggering amount of Bitcoin after making a simple mistake and is asking a tech giant to help them get it back.
A cryptocurrency trader claims to have lost £ 900,000 ($ 1.676 million) worth of bitcoin when they accidentally deleted a WhatsApp photo with security passwords.
The anonymous Reddit user posted his riddle on the Bitcoin subreddit when he asked tech-savvy people for advice on how to recreate the image in some form.
In the post, the user explained that a friend once gave him 25 BTC in his wallet – accompanied by a recommendation to introduce “seed words” to protect his investment.
To be on the safe side, the dealer claimed he tried to send the buddy a picture with his passwords to secure himself in case something went wrong.
The friend immediately told him it was his responsibility and the user removed the photo from the app, assuming it was stored elsewhere.
Fast forward to today and the user told Reddit they bought a new phone and tried to back up about 6000 photos and videos from their old device.
And only after looking for the picture filled with a password was the dealer shocked to find that it wasn’t there.
“To my horror, I think what I must have done when I deleted the picture from his phone.
“I’ve spent the last two days searching through my old pictures in hopes that I missed the picture, but to no avail.”
The user added that he is now asking both tech giants and the public for help to get his photo back.
He continued, “If I contact WhatsApp, can they get the picture? I know the approximate date and time. Chances are they saved this file as if it left my phone and got to my friends, must it have gone through the WhatsApp server?
“I was also wondering how I can contact them about this, as if they saw it and found that they might realize that it was 12 seed words.
“I know at this point that I should never store anything like this digitally, but by the time this happened I had only been in the crypto world for a few hours.
“Any ideas please.”
Most of the Redditors responded with some tough advice and tips on how to be more tech-savvy.
One user wrote: “You can run recovery software on your phone and hope you get it. WhatsApp can’t help you and I wouldn’t trust them with this information even if they could.
“Take some time to learn the basics.”
Another cruelly added, “Think on the positive side of the experience he is gaining.”
