Twelve pilgrims died and more than a dozen injured in a rush to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu and Kashmir. The rush was sparked by a massive rush of trailers, officials said today. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is “watching the tragic situation in person,” a minister said in his office.

The incident took place outside the sanctuary of the shrine on the hills of Trikuta.

The onslaught broke out when a huge crowd of devotees wishing to pay homage at the beginning of the new year entered the Vaishno Devi Bhawan, the officials said, adding that “large groups of devotees allegedly entered the bhawan without a permit” . . ”

The PMO said the amount will be paid to the families of those who lost their lives in the onslaught on Mata Vaishno Devi Bhawan. The wounded would receive 50,000 rupees, the prime minister’s office added.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh, who is Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is “personally observing the tragic situation arising from the rush to the Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine”.

He said PM Modi had “expressed sympathy for the bereaved and given instructions to provide all possible medical assistance and assistance to the injured.”

High-ranking officials and representatives of the sanctuary board are on site.

Mukesh Singh, the additional director general of the Police, or ADGP, has confirmed that 12 pilgrims died and at least 14 others were injured in the onslaught. “All of the injured were taken to hospital,” he added.

The condition of many injured is “serious”.
