Founded in 1958, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is an independent federal agency that succeeded the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA). It is responsible for the civil space program and aerospace research. Her vision is “to discover and expand knowledge for the benefit of mankind”.

Mars is the second smallest planet in our solar system and the fourth planet from the sun. Iron oxide is widespread on the Martian surface, which leads to its reddish color and nickname “The Red Planet”. The name of Mars comes from the Roman god of war.

“> Mars in February 2021? Looking back on a year of groundbreaking discoveries in Jezero Crater, Surface Operations Mission Leader Jessica Samuels lists the rover’s successes:

  • Driven more than 1.8 miles (2.9 kilometers)
  • A new record for the longest journey on a Martian day
  • Six samples and enumeration of Martian rocks and atmosphere that could eventually be brought back to Earth for further study
  • More than 50 gigabytes of scientific data
  • More than 100,000 images returned, including two “selfies”
  • 18 flights by NASA’s Ingenuity Mars Helicopter, which is hitchhiked to the Perseverance rover and coordinates flights

Samuels also explains the next phase of Perseverance’s mission: to explore the delta formed billions of years ago in the Jezero crater from sediment carried into the lake by an ancient river that once existed in the crater.

A major objective of Perseverance’s mission on Mars is astrobiology, including looking for signs of ancient microbial life. Characterizing the geology of the planet and the climate of the past, the rover paves the way for human exploration of the red planet. Perseverance is the first mission to collect and temporarily store Martian rocks and regolith (broken rock and dust).
