D66 boss Sigrid Kaag confirms that she will become finance minister | Domestic – to the world

It was announced on Thursday that D66 would supply the finance minister. It is common for the second largest party to claim this role. It was not yet clear who would take on the role. But in a statement to the AD, Kaag says it will do this itself. Despite the lack of a financial background, she will succeed the CDA party leader Wopke Hoekstra. He will also sit in the cabinet, but it is not yet known in which ministerial post.

Kaag says in her statement that she can best shape the ambitions of her party and the cabinet from a financial perspective: “The Netherlands stands for big decisions and big investments. In education. In the climate approach. In a strong Europe. The role of the finance minister is vital in the responsible implementation of these plans. “

Kaag also becomes Deputy Prime Minister and sees this position as an important responsibility. “I am thinking in particular of counteracting the polarization in politics and society.”

With this election, Kaag is the first female finance minister. In the coming week she will report to formateur Mark Rutte. In various media, the scientist Robbert Dijkgraaf (education), the bed planner Ernst Kuipers (public health), the mayor of Almere Franc Weerwind (legal protection) and the former party leader Rob Jetten (climate) are named as ministers in the name of D66. The new cabinet must be on the platform by January 10th.
