Cypriots are urged to stay home after floods and snowfalls caused by heavy rain – archyde

In Cyprus, on Friday night after heavy rains, the streets of the capital Nicosia were flooded, in many parts of the country the electricity was switched off, traffic was interrupted and the authorities were urged not to leave the house unnecessarily on New Year’s Day.

There are no reports of the victims, but the fire department has received more than two hundred calls from people trapped in their cars or asked to pump water from flooded basements because of the rapid rise in water levels.

In the Trodoss Mountains in Cyprus, on the other hand, the roads cannot be used without snow chains after heavy snowfall, local media report.

However, weather forecasters say the heavy rains will be a boon to Cyprus as the island has recently suffered from drought.
