Bradley officer killed: wanted Darius D Sullivan, wife of Sgt. Marlene Rittmanic fatally shot, partner injured – archyde

BRADLEY, Ill. (WLS) – A manhunt continues in the southern suburbs of Chicago Friday after a police officer was killed and critically injured another Wednesday night on duty.

Bradley Police Sgt. Marlene Rittmanic and her partner responded Wednesday night to a call from dogs barking in an unattended car in the Comfort Inn parking lot on Route 50, the Kankakee County Sheriff’s Office said. They went to the hotel room where the owner of the car was when the police said the people in the room started attacking the two officers and shooting them.

Rittmanic, 49, was killed and her partner, 27-year-old Tyler Bailey, was seriously injured. Bailey was transported to Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn for surgery for severe head injuries and remained in very critical condition on Thursday at the Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

The sheriff’s office is now offering a $ 25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of Bourbonnais, 25-year-old Darius D. Sullivan.

Sullivan should be viewed as armed and dangerous and should not be confronted, police said.

According to the Illinois State Police, an arrest warrant was issued against Sullivan and the 26-year-old Xandria Harris from Bradley. Harris is said to have been in the room with Sullivan.

Anyone with information about the suspects is urged to call the Illinois State Police helpline at 815-698-2315. Tipsters can also remain anonymous by calling this number or CrimeStoppers at (815) 93-CRIME.

“Please keep the officers, their families and the Bradley Police Department in your thoughts and prayers,” the sheriff’s office said.

The Kankakee County community now comes together to mourn and regain strength after this terrible tragedy.

“My son is a cop in Bradley, he was supposed to be on shift last night and took his last day of vacation,” said Jackie Hammond. “So we’re grateful, but it’s bittersweet here too.”

The incident appeared to be isolated and the police believe there is no further threat to the community.

Friends and parishioners mourned the loss as local residents hung blue ribbons and signs around town to thank the sergeant for her sacrifice. Purple flags adorned Bradley Police Station when the flag outside fluttered at half mast.

“Just to remind me of the best cop ever with Bradley PD,” said Jacqueline Jackson, holding a homemade sign.

Hundreds of people lined up in silence to honor Rittmanic during a procession that passed through the parishes of Bradley, Kankakee, and Bourbonnais.

“We never think much about these guys running around looking after us until that happens, but I’m just delighted to have the involvement and support,” said Doug Brown, who came to pay his respects.

“The people who are here to protect us have been taken and that’s just not right,” added Carol Chapman.

Rittmanic first became an officer in the Iroquois County Sheriff’s Department in 2000. She had been with the Bradley Police Department for 14 years, and her niece said she was only five years away from retirement. She leaves behind her wife Lynette Stua.

The last time a Kankakee County police officer was killed while serving on his duty was in 1996.

“We’re a community and we’re there for each other, for better or for worse, but tragedy seems to get it out of everyone,” said Chapman.

Kankakee Mayor Chris Curtis posted a statement on the incident on Facebook, saying:

Our hearts are heavy and full of sorrow for our neighboring city and its police. On behalf of the City of Kankakee, we pray for the family, friends, and staff of the fallen Bradley police officer. We also constantly pray for the other Bradley officer’s recovery.

“At this difficult time for our region, we ask God to offer healing and comfort to our communities, all law enforcement brothers and sisters, and first responders at this difficult time.

“As Mayor of Kankakee City, I promise all of our assistance and assistance in any way the village of Bradley needs or may request.”
