The city council of the nearby town of Barrow-in-Furness has to find a new pub owner after the previous one closed after 13 years. Those selected (and accepted) for the position are responsible for running the local pub – The Ship Inn – and managing the island.
On the island there is an old castle ruin, eight (holiday) houses and the pub with an adjoining house. From April to September day trippers sail back and forth, either with their own boat or with the ferry line. Besides, it’s quiet.
So calm that – according to a report from the local council – to warn budding pub owners. The island is beautiful and calm, but you have to endure this overwhelming calm. The views are fantastic, but the weather can also be rough and violent. “It is not always the dream it seems.”
According to tradition, the inn owner can also call himself “King of Piel”. During his installation he / she has to sit on an old wooden chair and put on a knight’s helmet, then be doused with beer buckets.
