ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Fawad Chaudhry, said on Thursday that political parties like PML-N and PPP were “only alive because of media coverage”.

Speaking to journalists with the Prime Minister’s Special Assistant for Political Communications, Shahbaz Gill, Chaudhry teased the PML-N and PPP even though the PTI suffered a severe blow in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s local elections.

Instead of celebrating the victory of other opposition parties in the KP LG elections, PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz should express her sympathy for her party’s lost candidates and motivate them in polls after their simple defeat, he said.

“PTI still the largest political party”

“The PTI is still the largest village council-level political party in KP,” he said.

Chaudhry said political leaders such as former President Asif Ali Zardari and ex-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had badly damaged the national economy through external debt, so the PTI government had to repay those loans.

He said Zardari used a wheelchair when he was due to appear in court to prove he had serious illnesses.

But after he was released on bail by the court, he began to “raise empty slogans and make high demands,” said the Federal Minister.

The information minister said the PPP had “no candidates” for the elections in Punjab because of Zardari’s policies that made the party unpopular in the country.

Chaudhry said the sole purpose of such political parties was “to hatch negative propaganda on the subject of inflation”.

“These political leaders couldn’t even go to Larkana and Nawab Shah because of their unpopularity, and they talk about wielding power in Islamabad and Lahore,” he added.

Nawaz and Zardari would now have to spend their lives abroad, he said.

Progress from PTI

Chaudhry said the previous governments had not built any new dams after Tarbela and Mangla, but the PTI government had started building new dams, after which the water reservoirs had “increased significantly”.

“There were roughly 200,000 companies in the country, of which 157,000 were launched in the last 30 months,” he said.

He said the PTI government was focused on developing the agricultural sector, due to which five main crops achieved record production, adding that rice, wheat and corn crops production was historically high while cotton crop production increased 44% has risen.

Chaudhry said Pakistan’s economic growth is “moving in the right direction” as the country saw record purchases of motorcycles, agricultural pesticides and vehicles.

He said $ 55 billion in debt borrowed from previous governments would have to be repaid over the next five years.
