Rafa Benitez confirms 11 Everton players are out with Covid-19 and injury

Rafa Benitez has admitted that he is “surprised” that Everton’s Boxing Day match against Burnley has not been postponed.

Everton requested the postponement of the game after suffering five positive coronavirus tests and six injuries.

The Blues travel to their next Premier League game against the Clarets on Sunday.

This is the first time Everton have played since last week’s away game at Chelsea.

Everton was scheduled to face Leicester City last weekend but the game has been postponed after a spike in Covid-19 cases at Foxes’ camp.

On Boxing Day, the early kick-off between Liverpool against Leeds United and Wolves against Watford was canceled after further positive Covid cases.

In his pre-game press conference, Benitez explained the gravity of the situation Everton is currently facing.

Benitez has confirmed that he only has nine senior players to play against Burnley and will be forced to use youth team players and has expressed surprise that the game has not been postponed.

The Everton boss has also confirmed that five players have had positive Covid tests in the past few days and will not be available.
