Qld Records 59 Covid Cases As Omicron Becomes Dominant Tribe; NSW falls nearly double Victoria – archyde

The overwhelming demand for testing has created long lines and forced several sites to close as Victoria reported 1,302 new Covid-19 infections and no deaths, AAPs reports Callum Godde.

It’s the first day the state has not reported a Covid death since September 16, and there are 13,175 active cases in the community.

A total of 406 patients are in the hospital, 81 of them in the intensive care unit actively with the virus and 43 on ventilators.

The average of seven-day hospital stays rose by seven to 387.

Around 4,800 people were vaccinated at state centers on Sunday while 71,491 tests were conducted.

The strong test demand in the run-up to Christmas is putting the state’s test system under pressure, and long queues form on Monday morning.

At least 10 test sites across Melbourne were temporarily closed at 9 a.m. after capacity was reached.

These include Alfred Health’s walk-in clinic in the CBD and Aughtie Walk in Albert Park, Montague Street in South Melbourne, the walk-in location of St. Vincent Hospital in Fitzroy, the Bundoora campus of La Trobe University and Monash University in Clayton .

A long line was also seen outside the walk-through Bourke Street location, where people had to wait several hours to be tested.

Acting premiere James Merlino said on Sunday that opening times at the centers have been extended in light of the number of people wanting to be tested in preparation for holiday or vacation travel over the Christmas week.

I know there are certain websites where the wait is long, but the average is 45 minutes to an hour or so …

I ask people to be patient. We are expanding and expanding it as best we can.

The state government has increased capacity by about 55% since October, with about 260 locations now operating across Victoria.
