Il Divo singer Carlos Marín has died at the age of 53, the vocal group announced on Sunday.
“It is with a heavy heart that we announce that our friend and partner Carlos Marin has passed away,” said the bariton’s group members in a statement shared on Il Divo’s website.
“His friends, family and fans will miss him,” said singers Urs Bühler, David Miller and Sébastien Izambard.
As a tribute to the singer, Marin’s groupmates said, “There will never be another voice or another ghost like Carlos.”
“The four of us have been together on this incredible journey from Il Divo for 17 years and we will miss our dear friend,” they said, adding, “We hope and pray that his beautiful soul rests in peace.”
The announcement comes after the men’s quartet had said in a Twitter statement on December 16 that Marín had been hospitalized during Il Divo’s UK tour.
The group had postponed the rest of their UK tour in December for at least a yearShe cites “illness” as the reason.
Why the singer was hospitalized is unclear.
Il Divo was originally brought together by Simon Cowell in 2003, with the group rising to international fame and reportedly producing three UK number one albums die British Official Charts Company.
In a statement on Twitter, Cowell said he was “devastated” by the news of Marín’s death.
“It’s so hard for me to put into words how I feel right now. I am devastated that Carlos Marin has died, ”he said.
“He loved life. He loved performing and always had so much appreciation for the fans who supported the group from day one, ”said Cowell. “Rest in peace Carlos. I’ll miss you.”
Marín was born in Germany and moved to Spain as a child.
Before that, he was married to the French-Spanish singer and actress Geraldine Larrosa, known under the stage name Innocence, until 2009.
On the website of Il Divo is the baritone quoted as once said this singing was his “way of saying what I feel, my way of life”.
“Singing is what makes me feel alive,” he had said. “So thank you that I can continue to live from what I love.”
