Boris Johnson calls cabinet meeting as ministers consider further restrictions – archyde

Good morning. Rachel Reeves, the Shadow Chancellor, gave radio interviews for Labor this morning and was of course asked about the Guardian picture of No.

# 10 says it was a work meeting. But Reeves made fun of that claim. When she was told on the program “Today” that the employees in the picture were at work, she replied:

I don’t know what you do at work, but I don’t spend my time drinking glasses of wine and eating cheese … I don’t take my husband to work either.

Carrie Johnson, the Prime Minister’s wife, is pictured at the gathering. Reeves continued:

It wasn’t a picture of people at work. It was a picture of people having fun, not just with colleagues, but also with their families. So, yes, I think there is evidence of violating the law, not just on this occasion, but on a number of occasions.

Dominic Raab, the Attorney General and Deputy Prime Minister, was on the air for government this morning and on the Downing Street picture he stuck to the line that it was a working meeting – although he also made the novel argument that it couldn’t be a party because people were wearing suits. He told Times Radio.

I want to point out that the rules you were referring to were all rules of social mixing. This wasn’t a social gathering. It’s obviously not a social get-together because you had people in work suits following meetings they had at work.

Most of the questions in the Raab interviews, however, were not about the picture, but about whether the government will announce new Covid restrictions before Christmas. But in response to these questions, almost nothing he said took us over, much of what we learned back then Sajid Javid, the Minister of Health on Sunday’s Andrew Marr Show, that doesn’t rule out that. “I will not chase after things that have not yet been decided” Raab Told today.

At the end of the day the position could be clearer. We will have a lobby briefing at 11.30am and the BBC says it is possible that a press conference could be held later, although it has not been confirmed.

I am trying to monitor the comments below the line (BTL) but impossible to read them all. If you have a direct question, add “Andrew” somewhere and I’ll be more likely to find it. I try to answer questions and if they are of general interest I will post the question and answer over the line (ATL) although I cannot promise to do it for everyone.
