A volcano erupted on Java, one dead and 41 injured – archyde

The outbreak occurred around 3:00 p.m. local time (9:00 a.m. CET). The footage shared by the BNPB’s Natural Disaster Management Office on its Twitter account shows locals fleeing a massive cloud of ash.

Lumajang district chief Thoriqul Haq said the nearby village was shrouded in darkness. Several hundred people had to move to emergency shelters or other parts of the city. The outbreak was accompanied by a strong storm. The rain, together with smoldering rubble and lava, formed a thick mud that disrupted the transport links between the two villages and made evacuation difficult.

AirNav Indonesia air traffic control said in a statement that the outbreak had no material impact on air traffic.

Semeru is the highest volcano in Java. It last erupted in January when the eruption was without victims. There are nearly 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia with a population of over 270 million. This area is part of the so-called circle of fire, a belt around fault lines in the Pacific Ocean with frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
