Bennett yells at Israeli minister for beating Shin Bet in the head – archyde

Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and the Minister for Strategic Planning in the Prime Minister’s Office, Eli Avidar, shouted at the cabinet meeting on Sunday over the government’s decision to allow the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) to prosecute those who have committed the COVID-19 Omicron-Variante.
Avidar pointed out that the new head of Shin Bet, Ronen Bar, was vice chairman when opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu was prime minister and opposed such surveillance in that government. Now that he’s the head he’s suddenly excited about this tool, Avidar said.

“Who are you to say that?” Bennett yelled at Avidar. “You can’t smear the Shin Bet’s head.”

Avidar replied that he would say what he wanted to say and later in the session said the decision projected hysteria. Avidar together with Justice Minister Gideon Sa’ar (New Hope), Education Minister Yifat Shasha-Biton (New Hope), Environment Minister Tamar Zandberg (Meretz) and Minister for Regional Cooperation Esawi Frej (Meretz) voted against the decision.

“We have promised change, so how can we look our voters in the eye when we grossly violate promise after promise to preserve our democracy?” Avidar said in a statement after the meeting ended. “This crosses a red line because it symbolizes everything that was wrong in Netayahu’s government.”

Even before Bennett pushed for Shin Bet surveillance, Avidar attacked him on Saturday at a cultural event in Tzur Hadassah.

Avidar said that Bennett was not realizing his potential and that the state of democracy was no better than it was under Netanyahu. He also threatened to punish Bennett if he did not allow a bill to be passed that would prevent an accused candidate from forming a government.

Political sources said Avidar was upset that Bennett was not moving forward with the plans he had worked out in his department of strategic planning. Avidar is also upset that he will not be promoted, which could happen if a current minister becomes head of the Jewish Agency.

The selection committee for the chairmanship of the Jewish Agency is due to meet on Tuesday afternoon. By then, Deputy Prime Minister Yair Lapid will announce the government’s candidate for the plum post after twice delaying his decision.

Whoever chooses Lapid will join the eight current candidates. The agency’s board of directors will make the final decision in February.

“Some members of the committee are losing patience,” said a source involved in the process. “You want to move forward. If Lapid has a candidate, they will consider him part of the process, but they will not stop him. “
