CAPE TOWN – Minister in the Presidency Mondli Gungubele said that due to the rising COVID-19 numbers, there must never be any potential for another lockdown in the country.

Gungubele has also admitted that not all political parties followed coronavirus safety protocols in the run-up to local elections.

The minister gave a briefing on Thursday following a recent cabinet meeting.

Gungubele said the COVID-19 infections are on the rise again and he said there is no other way out of the pandemic than through vaccination.

He wouldn’t speculate about another harsher lockdown coming up.

“Whenever the National Coronavirus Command Council meets, you make decisions that reflect this situation. And I would like to repeat that, we wish that there should never be another opportunity to seal off this country again. We are still dealing with the damage in 2020. ”he said.

He said the political parties were not following COVID-19 protocols ahead of the November 1 election.

“I just want to acknowledge that not all of our campaigns followed the COVID-19 principles. There have been a number of worrying cases, ”said the Minister.

Gungubele said the presidency will look to the health ministry to see if restrictions need to be reintroduced over the Christmas period.
