COVID-19 outbreaks were reported at four other Ottawa elementary schools on Thursday as some of the city’s most at risk residents prepare for a mass vaccination campaign starting Friday.

The latest COVID-19 update from Ottawa Public Health shows that there are now 36 active outbreaks across the city, 21 of which affect local elementary schools.

New schools hit by an outbreak this week include Chapel Hill Catholic School in Orléans, which has so far tested 11 students positive for the virus. OPH decided to close the school to personal learning on Wednesday due to the outbreak, according to a notice on the Chapel Hill website.

“These are the most unvaccinated populations and this is where we see the most outbreaks,” she told reporters on Wednesday.

Vaccinations for children ages five to 11 will begin on Friday in Ottawa, with more than 27,000 first-dose appointments booked for this on-site cohort in the first 24 hours of eligibility.
