Djordje Mihailovic, who not unexpectedly received the award for MVP of CF Montreal for 2021, received 80% of the votes.
Season ticket holders also voted Rudy Camacho Defensive Player of the Year (58% of the vote) in a turnaround season for a player who had been widely maligned in his first three seasons at the club.
Mihailovic, an arrival in December 2020 from Chicago FireHe set an unprecedented Montreal record of 16 MLS assists in his first season, beating Ignacio Piatti’s previous record of 13 in 2018. He also represented the US U23s at the CONCACAF Championship in Guadalajara earlier this year.
Mihailovic also played in all 34 MLS games (32 starts) that season, the third Montreal player in history after Evan Bush and Samuel Piette, who both made 34 starts in 2018.
It was a stellar season for the 23-year-old American, who also added a national championship medal to his career on Sunday after losing to Montreal Toronto FC. Mihailovic’s form in 2021 must also make Chicago Fire scratch their heads wondering why they are making the player go far too easily.
But that is all over now, Mihailovic sees very well in his new surroundings. He was just two assists behind Carles Gil’s leaders 18, and a continuation of the form he has shown as a Montreal player is sure to alarm US national team boss Gregg Berhalter.
He now has Justin Mapp and Saphir Taider’s career record of 21 MLS assists firmly in view, as Mihailovic has the top four in the category in mind. He is currently in sixth place after just one campaign.
Camacho made 31 MLS starts in central defense in his fourth season with the club, scoring 3 goals in the process, increasing his career at Montreal to 5. The only defender in the club’s MLS history to score more goals is Hassoun Camara (7).
The award of the French should double as a farewell gift. It seems that he is breaking new ground with his contract at the end of the year.
The award ceremony took place yesterday in the Nutrilait Center.
