Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, November 23) – The National Bureau of Investigation has arrested fugitive vlogger and former Iloilo official Manuel “Boy” Mejorada for his libel convictions for his social media post against Senator Franklin Drilon.
The arrest was confirmed on Monday by Mejorada’s partner Ruby on his Facebook page.
“I would like to inform everyone that he was arrested by agents of the NBI Special Forces today, November 22nd, 2021 at around 9:20 am.” She wrote.
“He’s been treated well, in his opinion,” added Ruby. “He will be handed over to the NBI Detention Center this afternoon. He was arrested on an arrest warrant to serve his defamation sentence with (Senator Franklin) Drilon as the applicant. ”
The Pasay Regional Court found Mejorada in January on four cases of online defamation under Republic Act No. 10175 or the Cybercrime Prevention Act 2012. It issued an arrest warrant for Mejorada.
A pending arrest warrant was issued against Mejorada as early as 2020 after the Supreme Court upheld the court’s earlier decision, which found him guilty of fourfold defamation and sentenced him to two to four years’ imprisonment.
The former provincial administrator of Iloilo went into hiding last year.
Mejorada was convicted of defamation for his Facebook posts alleging that some of the projects sponsored and supported by Drilon in Iloilo, including the Iloilo Convention Center and Iloilo Circumferential Road, were riddled with corruption.
Drilon, who is from Iloilo, has repeatedly denied the allegations.
