Discussions over the proposed lethal aid package came after Ukraine warned that an invasion could occur as early as January.
“The package could include the new Javelin anti-tank and anti-tank missiles and mortars,” the sources told Reuters. CNN, Tuesday (23.11.2021).
Air defense systems like the Stinger missile are also being considered, and the US Department of Defense has pushed for some to be sent to Afghanistan, such as Mi-17 helicopters to Ukraine. The Mi-17 helicopter is a Russian helicopter that was originally purchased by the US to serve Afghanistan. The Pentagon is now considering what to do with them after the US withdrawal from Afghanistan in August.
It is still unclear whether the military advisers will actually be sent to Ukraine.
Retired U.S. Soldiers said Lt. Col. Cedric Leighton told CNN that the Javelin anti-tank missiles were very effective against the T-80s that Russia is currently using in the fight against Ukraine. He noted, however, that any additional aid to Ukraine would undoubtedly risk further escalation of tensions with Moscow.
When asked about Russia’s military activities, White House Secretary Jen Psaki said: “The US government is concerned and has had extensive interactions with our European allies and partners, including Ukraine, over the past few weeks.”
“The US has also had talks with Russian officials about Ukraine and US-Russia relations in general,” he added.
