In the first Corona year there are tough debates about school closings, they should not be repeated this year. Pediatrician boss Jörg Dötsch says children are more likely to get infected privately than in schools. Children suffered massively from closings, warns an association spokesman.
In view of the tightened measures to contain the fourth corona wave, paediatricians have again urgently warned against school closings. “I urge you to keep the school going during the fourth wave,” said the President of the German Society for Child and Adolescent Medicine (DGKJ), Jörg Dötsch, of the “Rheinische Post”.
“We have found in various studies that the main infections in children and adolescents do not happen at school but in the family environment. In addition, most infections do not occur during school time, but mostly during the holidays. The schools are currently helping to curb infections in children – especially regular tests, wearing masks and hygiene are crucial, “explained Dötsch. He greeted her clear rejection of the traffic light parties to renewed school closings. This is a very important and good sign. “Now it is only to be hoped that they will still remember when the situation worsens and further action is necessary.” Dötsch demanded that pediatricians continue to be closely involved in coping with the pandemic. “This applies to all questions that concern children and young people. We hope that we will continue to be involved in inter-ministerial working groups even after the change of government, ”continued Dötsch.
Closure protects adults, not children
The professional association of paediatricians (BVKJ) also issued an urgent warning of renewed severe restrictions for children and adolescents. School and daycare closings would never primarily serve to protect children and young people, but rather to protect adults, especially unvaccinated adults. “These must never be done before all other measures to protect against infection have been exhausted, including a general vaccination requirement for adults,” said BVKJ federal spokesman Jakob Maske of the “Rheinische Post”. “Children and adolescents are not the group of people who occupy the intensive care units; on the contrary, intensive care is extremely rare in this age group, ”said Maske. In addition, children would continue to transmit the infection less often than adults.
The pediatrician pointed out the serious consequences of the lockdown measures for this age group. There has been a huge rise in psychiatric illness, obesity, gambling addiction, learning backlog, and the widening of the social divide. Against this background, Mask appealed: “Schools should only be closed as a last resort to deal with the pandemic. Another closure will have unforeseeable consequences for the children and young people. “
